Search Engine Optimization - Google Page Rank

People easily spend huge money on Pay-Per-Click advertising but most web visitors tend to hit non-sponsored search results links rather than sponsored listings. The best you can do for your site is to help it grab higher rankings. It will work hard for you day and night but first you have to do some work to make it search engine friendly. So, what you can do for your site? Here it is:

1. Research & select the best keywords

Invest some time to review your keywords to choose the best ones which are likely to be searched for by people. Take advantage of popular tools available online, like https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordTool or https://www.google.com/sktool/, to do keyword research.

2. ‘Dig up’ your competitors

Discover your competition and examine them. For example, it would be a powerful advantage to know more about the links pointing to your competitors’ websites. Incoming links are taken into account by search engines as an element of their ranking yardsticks. There are tools designed to give you detailed information on competitor position in search engines, quantity of incoming links, keywords that are in the title of linking page, page rank of linking pages, etc. Check out http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com or http://www.linkdiagnosis.com/ for this job. Now you know what you are competing with.

3. Optimize page titles

Every page of your website should have different title and meta tags. Keep them relevant to the page content and around 66 characters (with spaces) as Google does not display more. Include your keywords in title tags.

4. Optimize meta tags

Optimizing and ordering your tags is another important step to make your website work better with search engines. Meta tags are placed in head segment of a page and describe what the site is about. Meta tags mean hidden code which is read only by search engine spiders. Description meta tag is the text which shows up under your title on the results page. Keep the description clear, to the point and not more than 170 characters (with spaces).

5.  Make use of headings

Headings are a great way to organize information on website. Try to use at least H1-H2-H3 when building your page.

6. Make use of title and ALT attributes

It’s very often that URLs do not contain the subject of the page that would tell search engines right away what the site is about. So use proper titles for links and alt attributes to describe images to search engines.

7. Rename your filenames

Anytime there is a chance to show or demonstrate content, make sure it contains the keywords in the filename as well as a title or ALT attribute. Save your images, media, and web pages with the keywords in the filenames.

8. Build a site map page

Create a site map to have effective navigation throughout your site. Since each page on your website will be linked to the site map, it enables web crawlers as well as web users to find content fast and easy.
